About Us
Martyn Dobermann Stud has been established since 1970, and we are the oldest established breeders exhibiting still in New Zealand and are one of only eight inductees into Dogs NZ (NZKC) Breeders Hall of Fame.
To date we have bred 90 plus Champions and 10 Grand Champions and imported an Australian dobermann from all USA breeding who became a NZ Grand Champion. We are the first breeders to have a Grand Champion Dobermann registered with the New Zealand Kennel Club and we also have an American Champion to our name, being the only Dobermann kennel to achieve this in the history of the breed along with many Australian Champions.
We, together with our children, have imported four American Dobermanns from the USA, and have currently in the frozen semen bank from the USA, the choice of fifteen top American male Dobermann's for our on going breeding program.
We have achieved numerous awards at both All Breed Champion Shows and Dobermann Specialists Shows. One of our major achievements would be having bred the winner of the Australian Dobermann Nationals, where Australian Champion Martyn Double Trouble (Imp NZ) who won Best In Show over 316 Australian Dobermann's. To date Martyn Dobermanns have won in excess of 150 All Breeds Best In Shows at all levels of competition. Some other important wins were the Dog of the Year, Pal Top Dog and Runner up Top Dog.
Martyn is one of only two New Zealand Dobermann Specialist Judges and has adjudicated four times in the USA, and also in Malaysia, Philippines, nearly every state in Australia, New Zealand he has judged the Japanese Specialty.
Martyn gives seminars and lectures to breeders, exhibitors and judges. He has also written several articles on the breed and he was invited by the New Zealand Kennel Club to write a breed supplement for the Internet web site. Martyn is also an Honorable Life Member of the Dominion Club.
As a family we exhibit most weekends of the year. This allows us to keep in check our continued dedication of quality, always trying to epitomize the breeds standard and adhere to it vigorously and health test our breeding stock.
By percentage of overall wins we believe we are New Zealand’s leading breeders/exhibitors of all time.
Martyn Dobermann Kennels Health Policy Statement At Martyn Dobermann Kennels, the health and well-being of our Dobermanns are our utmost priority. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of care and genetic health for our dogs. To ensure the longevity and quality of life of our Dobermanns, we implement rigorous health testing protocols for Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) and Von Willebrand Disease (VWD), focusing on the following genetic markers: DCM1 (Dilated Cardiomyopathy Type 1): DCM is a severe heart condition that can lead to heart failure and sudden death. We test all of our breeding stock for the DCM1 genetic mutation to identify carriers and affected dogs. This allows us to make informed breeding decisions, minimizing the risk of passing on this condition to future generations. DCM2 (Dilated Cardiomyopathy Type 2): In addition to DCM1, we also test for the DCM2 mutation, another genetic factor that contributes to the development of this life-threatening condition. By screening for DCM2, we further reduce the likelihood of producing puppies that may be at risk for DCM. VWD (Von Willebrand Disease): VWD is a bleeding disorder that can pose serious health risks to affected dogs. We conduct genetic testing for VWD to ensure that our breeding dogs are not carriers of this condition. This helps us prevent the transmission of VWD and maintain a healthy lineage.
Our breeding program is designed with the health of our dogs as the top priority. By testing for DCM1, DCM2, and VWD, we strive to produce puppies that are not only healthy but also have the best possible start in life. We believe in transparency and are happy to discuss our testing protocols with prospective puppy owners to provide peace of mind and assurance that their future family member comes from a responsible and caring breeder.
